"Voelstoel" was commissioned by Concertgebouw Brugge. Their question was plain and simple: "Can you make a kind of chair that makes sound "feelable". My answer was, of course: "Yes!"
I got in touch with Ward Delbeke, whom I already knew as a former neighbour, someone I bumped into on a regular basis and, above all, a furniture maker of a special kind! He was to be my partner in crime. Ward loves working with triangles, as you can see.
I knew I wanted to work with transducers and exciters, that I wanted them to be split up in different frequency zones and that I wanted those zones to spread out over the installation. During that first meeting we quickly came to this rough idea of an abstract shaped kind of chair.
Pretty soon Ward came up with a bunch of sketches, I made up my technical plan and mixed that all into a nice presentation for the people at Concertgebouw Brugge. We had a deal!
Well, some months, a prototype and hours of testing later, here it is! We are very proud to present our "Voelstoel", or our "Vibrating Soundscape".
